"Any idea when you're interviewing Haim?" an inquiry pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

However, there remains a single issue: The author likewise longs to be Haim's fourth member. Furthermore, we are not alone. Several high-profile supporters have also coveted the role.

It's clear something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their career doing sets at local delicatessens with their family. Today, they are multi-time Grammy hopefuls.

In the tradition of the most iconic groups, they're a inseparable unit. Their visuals often depict them walking in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such pure happiness you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a guitar'," says Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "It is the biggest compliment. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage young girls to form a group."

"Therefore all is invited to be the honorary Haim sister."

Historic Milestone

The band are connecting from a break, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first female band ever in contention for the award.

"I follow the lists every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the accolade is deeply felt by the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major milestone," continues Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the women that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Candor

The record came out of a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that odd in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The themes track endings and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them determining in real life who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to make an effort in ignoring the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That newfound toughness called for a different sonic direction – more organic and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Collective Camaraderie

The trio's openness inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their personal misadventures.

One man broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Future

One can easily sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide audience.

However the sister act will consistently be their primary priority.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was little," concludes Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still kicking."
