European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
