An defense official has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is actively looking into the possible threats posed by Chinese-made vehicles, while personnel have been told to avoid talking about secret information in all cars.
Security Guidance for MoD Staff
During a recently aired appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to talk about classified material while riding in Chinese vehicles.
The minister said that the ministry is “looking into” cars from China within its vehicle pools, however noted that security is a concern in all modern vehicles.
We have a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is not to plug MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a classified level in any vehicle, because of the increasing risks of surveillance that are present in all vehicle, to only have those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about safety.
After it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”
Broader Defence Context
This announcement comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the existence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off public transport and bring chaos to public transit.
Additionally, a Russia spy ship was reportedly directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.
This broader security situation highlights the importance of strong protocols and vigilance in all aspects of government operations, from vehicle usage to discussions habits.
