India's capital Wakes Up to Toxic Pollution Following Diwali
Tuesday brought residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with inhaling severely hazardous air that fell into the "alarming" level.
Alarming Pollution Measurements
Several parts of the capital recorded an AQI over 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the recommended threshold established by the WHO.
Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of 1800, representing fifteen to twenty times above acceptable limits.
Pyrotechnics Ban and Recent Policy Shifts
For the past four years, officials had enforced a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the dangerous haze that blankets the city as colder weather begins.
Yet recently, the newly elected local leadership petitioned the supreme court to request a relaxation of the restrictions.
Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – previously doubted by environmentalists as being only approximately one-third less polluting – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".
Judicial Verdict and Implementation
To the disappointment of environmental and health activists, the court complied with the appeal, mandating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be set off during designated hours throughout the Diwali.
During the celebrations, there was extensive violation of the regulated periods across the metropolis, with little enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly version.
Numerous monitoring devices throughout the city showed pollution reaching highest levels around the night hours to the most severe readings observed during celebrations in at least recent memory.
International Consequences
The widespread use of fireworks during Diwali also triggered a blame game with bordering Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab partly blaming deteriorating air quality in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles originating in India following the celebrations.
Persistent Environmental Problem
The dangerously high concentrations of atmospheric toxins in the capital have continued as a major problem for over a decade and a half, with the condition showing no improvement.
Near celebratory seasons, the levels of dangerous particulate matter in the environment has been found to spike to 70% higher the peak levels ever measured in the Chinese city, which was formerly viewed as the planet's dirtiest metropolis.
Various Contamination Factors
The problem in the city is attributed to a mix of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, construction debris, construction activities, garbage fires and pollutants from crop residue ignition in adjacent regions of neighboring agricultural zones.
In these regions, farmers routinely set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, generating dangerous smog that then gets trapped over the city as colder air arrives.

Public health and economic impact on the roughly thirty-three million people calling home the Delhi area is enormous, according to numerous studies.
This pollution causes elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and can even lead to malignancies.
Environmental contamination is calculated to be responsible for 10,000 premature mortalities per year in the capital.
