New research reveals that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People using such treatments must be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team note that people who lose weight through dieting generally see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
People who have stopped the medication report a sudden return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch activating and you become starving," said an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
